This is an extension to the blog post, Buy Beats Online: A Guide.

Check out the video: http://youtu.be/Jb3naUs1slA

If you’re looking to buy beats online, you need to know where to buy them from. A simple Google search can help, but below is a direct source of links you can use to shop for the beats you want.

I’ve decided to narrow down and build one post per genre at the moment, but I’ll create a general resource directory where you can buy beats online using the main directories as your guide.

So, yeah, I’ll update you frequently on the top ten beats availabe to go to get some killer beats.

Buy Beats Online: Pop Beats for Sale

I initially started out pulling up beats from every genre, but there are so many beats available that I decided to break it up into sections.

I’ll make one long post available soon where you can access ALL of the beat locations on ONE page.

GiveMeBeats.Net:

JeeJuh.com

MyBeatShop.com

  • “An obama bomba” [sic] by BHAV (Haha I love the song title)
  • “Doperockproductions” [sic] by doperockproductions

BeatSwagger.com

  • “If I Had My Way” by Illabeats
  • “BODEGA FREESTYLE” by D Cash(Bodega, btw, means either “A grocery store in a Spanish-speaking neighborhood” OR “wineshop or a wine cellar”)

BeatsForSaleNow.com

So there’s the list for the Pop genre. I’ll update this every now and then, so keep updated.

If you’re in the market for beats, I think you’ll find this guide pretty useful. I personally enjoy updating my “database” of awesome music producers. It keeps things fresh.

Now, If you have better suggestions on where to buy beats online OR you have some beats of your own that you want to share, comment below!

Buy Beats Online – A Guide

Note: I am not an attorney, and you should not consider this legal advice. This is Self Defense 101 for interacting with the music industry.

It pains me as a musician to suggest the ways on how you can purchase high quality music, buy beats online, for a low price. Yet, it’s obvious that you want to get the highest profit with your work for the least amount of buck. Also, $500,000 (i.e. for an ad campaign) seems a little pricey when you simply want to introduce the music into the beginning of your work or set it as the background of your music.

So, something you might want to know when you buy beats online is that you can get some really high quality beats for cheap–if only because the musician simply doesn’t know what he’s doing in the music publishing realm.

Buy Beats Online: Introduction

So, we’re going to discuss two main things when you buy beats online: 1) What you actually purchase and 2) Where you can purchase these high-quality beats. These are the two fundamentals toward getting the beats that you want. I’m going to cover #1 for now and link you to number two in an upcoming post.

I’m not saying that other publishers and writers don’t know what they’re talking about (they do), it’s just that most of what I’ve seen takes the music publishers into account, but it doesn’t take you into account.

Music publishers pushing for higher rates on their end doesn’t exactly take you into account, does it?

Buy Beats Online: What Are You REALLY Purchasing?

You MUST know what the hell you’re buying. That is, you want to know what you’re buying if you want to avoid the chance of a huge lawsuit should your creative work go big. You need to know what rights you have with the music you purchase, even though it can get a little technical.

You might buy a license for:

  • Personal Use License- (i.e. iTunes) In this license, you cannot redistribute this for a public performance or sale of any kind (Note: Mechanical License for Alterations)
  • A Mechanical License – In this license, you can alter the beats the person has made while keeping the initial integrity of the song)
  • A work-for-hire license – In this license, You pay a flat fee and the song is (usually) completely yours
  • A step deal – This, like the inadvertently created deal above, dictates that you pay the musician in amounts that elevate according to certain milestones you reach… let’s say that you purchase the beats to the song and you pay a certain royalty… then your music or your film his the box office for billions of dollars and rapes the world record a new one… according to the deal, you’ll need to pay something like “$10K bonus for every million made.”

NOTE!

Ensure that I, the music publisher, haven’t registered the songs I created via work-for-hire to ASCAP. This is because an ASCAP registered song doesn’t honor a work-for-hire agreement. And if you think you’ll commercialize an ASCAP-registered song without paying fees, you’ve got a surprise coming for you, per ASCAP’s site.

Also, according the music industry expert Randall Wixen in his book The Plain and SImple Guide to Music Publishing he notes frequently the power of performing rights organizations frequently.

By the way, as a music publisher, that would be cool if I could step up my income up based on your success.

For example, let’s say you make Avatar and “gross” $1,000,000,000 in revenue.

$1,000,000,000 => $1000 Million => 1000 x $10,000 = $10,000,000 you pay to me because of how awesomely successful you are.

Even though $10,000,000 is 1% of your revenue (note the chart below) and $10,000,000 has two fewer zeroes than the overall revenue from Avatar it’s still a huge chunk of money.

Sure, it seems fair that my awesome music helped make your movie what it is. But let’s face it. $10,000,000’s a rather big sum of money that you pay to me, right?

Well, even though I deserve the money or I feel that I deserve it (you know, because I created that kick-ass music/set of beats that helped you make your blockbuster hit)—even though I feel I deserve the money–you’ll get a much better deal by using a work-for-hire agreement with me.

And as we said before, the work-for-hire agreement means that you get to keep full rights to the music (usually), no questions asked.

You’d also make sure that the music you retrieve from me is NOT ASCAP registered–otherwise ASCAP will come aknocking for the royalties for:

  1. Movie theater presentations (or a percentage of the revenue) and
  2. the DVD sales royalties.

NOTE!

Just because you’ve drafted the work-for-hire agreement doesn’t mean that you can’t put royalty agreements or pay me, the musician, when your move turns into the blockbuster.

Buy Beats Online: License Recap

So, to recap, to save money, make sure that

  1. Whatever work you want from me is NOT ASCAP-registered
  2. Draft a work-for-hire agreement where you gain 100% ownership of my work (or some variation that allows me some ownership… which’d be more fair)

Buy Beats Online: Conclusion

What could it cost you not to learn the material above and make sure you know what you purchase? If you said, “It’d cost me big time,” I’d agree with you very much.

Look forward to seeing your awesome music with my work on the big screen. Just consider sending a royalty… even if the government doesn’t ask you to! It’s the music writers that give depth and vision to your work.

“Music is the most visual communication.”

How Many Songs Have You Written?

I encountered this awesome article on songwriting. Probably could’ve gone well with the earlier post on making instrumentals.

Here’s the part I liked:

“A song usually has three short melodies, two of which are repeated several times…

Chorus: The chorus is a lyrics-music combination that is repeated with little or no change throughout the song…

Verse: The verse has the second melody of the song… The verse’s lyrics are actually what usually change; as the verses usually give details about the song’s topic…

Bridge: The third melody and the one that -in most song structures- appears only once. It is better if the listener gets a small surprise in the bridge… The bridge’s lyrics they usually represent a conclusion or a flash back to the whole song, this adds to the surprise. Sometimes, -especially in Rock- the bridge is just an instrumental solo with no lyrics.”

How to Get Started with Songwriting – P1

This actually became incredibly useful for me. Along with his notes on “agreed-on song structures,” I’ve started compiling my song ideas into this structure. And, for me, my music is like a liquid… I need to pour it into a container for others to drink.

Let me know how this goes for you!

“In This Day [Industrial Music Publishing]… Became Nearly My Sole Occupation”

Here is an interesting quote. Again, I’m no expert in industrial music publishing; however, I find this quote incredibly inspiring.

“In this day [music publishing], and a particularly [industrial music publishing], in the most comprehensive sense of the term, became nearly my sole occupation. I read with ardour those works, so full of genius and discrimination, which modern [musicians] have written and played on these subjects… My application was at first fluctuating and uncertain; it gained strength as I proceeded and soon became so ardent and eager that the stars often disappeared in the light of morning whilst I was yet engaged in my [studio]” (adapted from Shelley’s Frankenstein).

This quote has driven me to a level of inspiration so high in whatever I pursue. Whether I develop my skills in music or business (music business?), I look back at that quote often and feel even more driven to get the latest details and wisdom from the experts.

Perhaps it can help you, too. I wonder how much we can improve ourselves by looking a little bit more, by bringing just a little bit more quality information into our lives that we actually use.

Perhaps it would help us quite a bit to have the experts point us in the right direction–if only just a little bit more.

This Post Could Make You Rich

In an earlier post, I posted David Jenyn’s, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) video producer, e-mail to me about how much time he devotes to his finished work. He e-mailed me how he infuses three hours of his time into every finished, edited minute.

Why not use this for your personal NatAblWritMon, or National Album Writing Month?

If authors everywhere are going to devote at least twenty hours over the next month to creating their masterpiece 50,000 word novel, then why can’t we do something special and create an awesome song or something?

So, here’s the challenge (if you’re not doing NaNoWriMo)… devote a certain amount of time each day to crafting that master song.

How You Might Use That Part of the Day Might Include

  • Improvising/Jamming Out/Freestyling with your Instrument of Choice
  • Consulting Music Theory books and sources to implement new ideas into your music
  • Mastering  a certain transition (say, from chord to chord) in your natural playing so that you can implement them in your freestyle and therefore into your song
  • Calling (and then E-mailing) your particular music idol to create your song
  • Modeling other songs to make your song… (preferably to make your song better than there’s)
  • Take drugs… for the remaining eighteen hours after you master your best-selling hit in the first two

If it takes an author 2 hours to crank out 5,000 words, then it means that it takes the author 20 hours (not including breaks) to crank out 50,000 words. So, with that in mind, let’s do something crazy and devote 5 hours to your music—specifically your next hit song—and continually add (or better yet, take away) components and modules with the song to make it better.

That’s about 43 minutes  a day to making this one hit song super good… or 1 hour a day if you exclude weekends. I prefer writing daily (as you’ll see on this blog).

Happy Songwriting! (This post could make you rich)

Trent Reznor’s “Ghosts” – An Addition to An Earlier Post

In an earlier post, I mentioned how if you consider themes with your music, you’ll dramatically improve the quality of your music. It doesn’t matter if you play like a two-year-old or a seasoned veteran.

Well, I’ve started listening to Trent Reznor’s Ghosts Album again lately. I used to not really care about this album until recently, due to my sudden (and rather extreme) interest in music and music publishing.

Trent Reznor says that following (which proves my point on themes):

“This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective – dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I’m very pleased with the result…”

Ghost’s Home

It really transformed how I looked at his music when I noticed the corresponding slideshow as I listened to his music.

Consider “dressing” a scene or plot with your music. Then let me know how it changes your music.

P.S.  I commit to posting my first song within the next 30 days of this post.

Where Do We Go To Learn More About The Best Software on the Market Today?

Good to know where to learn about the best software, because when you access the right websites,  you’ll always stay up to date and never miss out on potentially critical updates on the software you employ in your work.

To learn most about the best software available, visit propellerhead.se and Youtube.com/reasonmastaa. These two sources will give you the best information on music software available today (PropellerHead really gives a super unbiased (and substantive!) description on various elements and principles incorporated in the music software! I think that they make such great software BECAUSE of how deeply they write about their software.)

Other resources include Fruity Loops’s YouTube channel. Ableton’s IN-SOFTWARE tutorial (which I appreciate and find bad-ass).

NeuroPlasticize: Research at ten different aspects of the software… especially from the software developer’s website and experts with their own YouTube channels.

What Would Happen If You Made Your Music Better and Better… Not Perfect? (Plus: Music Theory)

This question results from a business-based home-study course titled, How to Build a Profitable Business from Scratch by Eben Pagan. You’ll find this important because he demonstrates how people ruin their ability to develop because of their perfectionistic attitudes on the world of meeting needs and building products and marketing.

If only people would focus on improvement, then people would skyrocket their ability to craft and produce beautiful, da Vinci (or Michael Jackson) level music. I say this with absolute certainty, because everything I applied this “Better and Better” method too (including music) has doubled, tripled and quadrupled in quantity quality.

What happened with me when I used this? With music, I now play for fifteen to fifty minutes every day at a rather advanced level (chord progressions and scale-oriented melodies in harmony with each other)–where I used to only play for ten minutes at a really crappy level.

If that’s not a shift in the quality of life and the music we create, then  I don’t know what is.

To proselytize yourself from the clogged cog world of perfectionism, go for “Great” by asking, “What could I do better,” instead of “Why can’t I make this perfect?”

Run: Ask yourself this question right now and, when you go out in the world, for whatever purpose, ask yourself this wheneveryou’ll enjoy your life about fifty times better–especially within the context of whatever you focus on.

Why Does One Not Want To Invest The Time To Make His Music Great?

Why Does One Not Want To Invest The Time To Make His Music Great?

To extend the discussion of music theory from our earlier chord progression theory post, this question penetrates the reason why people relinquish one of the “liquid” (cashable) and exciting opportunities available in the human experience: Bashing an instrument to hell to make random pattern of sounds.

Now, if you don’t read this post and make yourself privy to the reasons you might not work like a dog on your music, you then chain yourself and those who surround you  to mediocrity, because simple awareness could solve these problems of yours.

I now type for you the reasons why an individual might not invest the time to make his music great

  • Because he creates images in his head of people frowning and ignoring him and his music; he compares everything he does with the greats instead of observing his own progress
  • Because his parents laugh at him or told him he’s “Too loud” when he’d enjoy himself and his music
  • Because he might freeze in the complexity of music and the theory involved that expresses how to relate notes to each other for the effect he wants
  • Because he attempted to perfect his music instead of making it better… and better… and better (big difference here)

To transfer the person from accruing reasons why he invests too little  time into his music to: “Why he invests too much time into his music, do the following:

  1. Figure out what he values most (done by asking, “What’s most important to you in life?”)
  2. Ask him how not playing music violates that value.
  3. Offer him a solution for how he can meet that value with music.
  4. Then continue to talk about music creation with that highest value–implicitly (i.e. just talk about the sounds and what sounds he’d make with a “Free” moment or a “Loving” memory… etc.)

Dance: Seriously, if you or someone you know invests too little time in his or your music, then get up right now, grab a sheet of paper, write down the answer to, “What’s most important to me in Life?” then finish the rest of the steps. Do this now.

What Theory Do We Need To Know When “Making It Big” in the Music Business?

Music Theory can make or break your music career. These guys help me validate this question, especially when it comes to chord progression theory.

When people recognize the power and principles contained within music theory, they can “unlock the atom” that lies within presses of the piano keys.

Before we go on here, take a moment now to visualize (or hear/feel) the size of the atom bomb… then compare that to the size of the nuclear explosion. There’s a huge disparity between that device and the effect it creates! With this you can appreciate the true potential we have in very small amounts of matter.

Most people, like me, see just stuck keyboard that they can make sounds with. Yet, I’d later discover that piano players and expert musicians look at the machine as an emotionally enhancing object, ready to explode beauty and love

It can astound you that a similar verocity, power,  resides within your music. Knowing a bit of theory (especially chord progression theory) will allow you to cut the atom to explode your musical world–the atom being your musical instrument.

Now consider this exercise to figure out “What Theory [You] Need to Know When “Making It Big”:

Look at your hand. Really, lift your hand up and look at it.

Now imaging your hand growing and grow, ’till it’s the size of the Earth… then the  solar system, then the universe.

What happened? Your hand disappeared.

That’s because we can’t picture (or hear, for that matter) anything without some sort of reference point, object, or sound.

Specifically with theory, though, you need to recognize that EVERYTHING lies entirely with relativity. A note does not “dissonate” without another note. You cannot create sad music and feelings (aka minor chords and scales) without other sound to compare that initial note with.

We can only observe contrasts. Focus on the distance between your notes when you improvise or play your songs instead of absolutes.

When you go out and do this right now, you’ll notice your work transform. Even if this concept seems obvious to you and you’ve familiarized yourself very much with it, still use it, then even more. Double your focus on this principle when you play your music, and your work will transform.

Even if you just play pre-made songs, then use this to actually make up your own songs… lol!

(I need to post my own improv recordings on here when I talk about music creation. You’ll enjoy the impact I’ve created ever since applying these concepts.)

Action Step (Repeated for Effect): Search Google for Chord Progression Theory, observe sites that that will tell you what you want to know about constructing chords and how to progress through a series of chords to attain certain effect.  After you study for about thirty minutes, go back to your keyboard and jam away (with a sheet of chords, preferably) and notice what you can do with this insight.
