What Theory Do We Need To Know When “Making It Big” in the Music Business?

Music Theory can make or break your music career. These guys help me validate this question, especially when it comes to chord progression theory.

When people recognize the power and principles contained within music theory, they can “unlock the atom” that lies within presses of the piano keys.

Before we go on here, take a moment now to visualize (or hear/feel) the size of the atom bomb… then compare that to the size of the nuclear explosion. There’s a huge disparity between that device and the effect it creates! With this you can appreciate the true potential we have in very small amounts of matter.

Most people, like me, see just stuck keyboard that they can make sounds with. Yet, I’d later discover that piano players and expert musicians look at the machine as an emotionally enhancing object, ready to explode beauty and love

It can astound you that a similar verocity, power,  resides within your music. Knowing a bit of theory (especially chord progression theory) will allow you to cut the atom to explode your musical world–the atom being your musical instrument.

Now consider this exercise to figure out “What Theory [You] Need to Know When “Making It Big”:

Look at your hand. Really, lift your hand up and look at it.

Now imaging your hand growing and grow, ’till it’s the size of the Earth… then the  solar system, then the universe.

What happened? Your hand disappeared.

That’s because we can’t picture (or hear, for that matter) anything without some sort of reference point, object, or sound.

Specifically with theory, though, you need to recognize that EVERYTHING lies entirely with relativity. A note does not “dissonate” without another note. You cannot create sad music and feelings (aka minor chords and scales) without other sound to compare that initial note with.

We can only observe contrasts. Focus on the distance between your notes when you improvise or play your songs instead of absolutes.

When you go out and do this right now, you’ll notice your work transform. Even if this concept seems obvious to you and you’ve familiarized yourself very much with it, still use it, then even more. Double your focus on this principle when you play your music, and your work will transform.

Even if you just play pre-made songs, then use this to actually make up your own songs… lol!

(I need to post my own improv recordings on here when I talk about music creation. You’ll enjoy the impact I’ve created ever since applying these concepts.)

Action Step (Repeated for Effect): Search Google for Chord Progression Theory, observe sites that that will tell you what you want to know about constructing chords and how to progress through a series of chords to attain certain effect.  After you study for about thirty minutes, go back to your keyboard and jam away (with a sheet of chords, preferably) and notice what you can do with this insight.
